    Cow Chips
SABR member Joel Rippel wrote Len’s obituary in the October 26, 2018 Star Tribune:

Leonard Youngman, Ever a Gentleman, Dies at 107

Len died October 16, 2018. He grew up in Sleepy Eye and was present when Babe Ruth and Bob Meusel played there October 16, 1922. Len was playing nearby and picked up a ball that Ruth had hit for a long home run, a ball that has remained in the family. He also appeared in a photo of Meusel and Ruth peering around Meusel. That picture is on a banner at the Sleepy Eye ballpark:

Brown County baseball historians Randy Krzmarzick and Scott Surprenant have researched the visit of Ruth and Meusel to Sleepy Eye and befriended Youngman, whom they hoped would be able to return to Sleepy Eye and throw out the ceremonial first pitch for a centennial celebration of the 1922 game. Randy and Scott have been featured in television reports on their research into Babe Ruth’s trip to Sleepy Eye:

Randy writes for the New Ulm Journal and recently wrote about the hosting he and others did for a SABR member last June, taking him on a Brown County baseball tour:

Weeds: Sunday in June Perfect for a Baseball Tour

Below is a picture from the Gibbon at Stark game, the culmination of a perfect baseball day.

SABR Games Project a Great Way to Research and Write
Want to do some research and writing on baseball but don’t know what to do? Check out the SABR Games Project. It’s fun and achievable, no matter what your level of experience is. Think of a game you’d like to write about: it could be a historic game, a game you’ve attended, maybe the first baseball game you ever went to. Follow the instructions to contact the proper people to see if the game is available. The Games Project Research Committee has a newsletter with useful information.

The November 2018 newsletter has a great column by Len Levin with tips and advice.

Check it out and go for it.
